Sessions are carried out in real time, and there are a variety of tools available to support the teaching and learning experience.
You need a computer linked to the internet, and a good broadband connection.
I teach over the Internet using Skype, a free program which allows us to see and hear each other, live, in real time, from any location in the world, using a webcam.
My rates for Skype harmonica lessons are for an hour, for a half-hour. Computer High-Speed Internet Access I’m told that Skype works over dial-up, but it’s not great.
You’ll get a smoother picture, better audio, and fewer dropped calls if your home Internet connection is high-speed. Just head over to the Skype website, click on “Get Skype,” choose your operating system (PC, Mac, or Linux), download and install it.
Time Zone & Schedule I’m in New Hampshire, on the east coast of the USA, so my time zone is the same as New York City (Eastern Standard Time).
For folks outside the US, my time zone is GMT -4, -5, or -6, depending on Daylight Savings.
The problem is that video in itself is not enough for effective online tutoring – you need a whiteboard where you can share formulae and charts. You can try and work around this in Skype by using add-ons to record audio, e.g. Good ones will allow two way interaction between the tutor and the student. It’s not unusual to be sharing presentations during an online tutoring lesson.
